But the daily walks around Keeneland Way continue, perhaps at a slower speed, and our pleasant visits to eating places in town. There has been concern about the swine-flue, but fortunately, we have not been affected. Some excitement was provided by a lightening nearly out of the blue sky, which struck a tree near our house, cut the water supply, and killed my computer, making a replacement necessary.
In June/July, our host family went to Zambia, to visit with Naseem’s family, and since it was felt essential, that someone should be on hand to keep an eye on us oldies, we invited our friend Marta Bubeck from Bayreuth for a visit during the absence of Armin’s family. It was nice to have her around, and she looked well after us and after the many flowers around the house. Together we undertook some outings into the nearby mountains of North Carolina. That much travelling Sylvia can still enjoy.
Early in October, daughter Helene paid us a visit and helped celebrate Hans’ 83rd birthday. Now Christoph, who was here last Christmas, is planning to come again and be with us for New Year and until January 21.
We are grateful for the frequent visits from our children abroad and for the company of Armin and his family. We miss Markus, who is farthest away, in Antalya, Turkey, working hard to run a language school.
Mail, telephone and e-mail let us hear from many of you at times and keep us abreast of events in the wider world, and that we are thankful for.
The home-made Advent Wreath is sitting again in its usual place, and we light candles every evening. Their quiet light cheers us up even on grey and rainy days and make us look forward to the coming of the True Light, which proclaims Truce and Peace.
Wishing you all the blessings of Christmas and a good New Year,
Affectionately,
Hans and Sylvia
